Additional Information About Santee Lakes
Santee Lakes is a 190-acre, seven-lake recreational oasis. The lakes were formed in 1959 as part of an innovative water reclamation system by the Padre Dam Municipal Water District and opened to the public in 1961. The lakes run in almost a straight line stretching north to south, with Lake 1 located at the southern-most end (nearest the entrance). Click here for a basic layout of the lakes.
Santee Lakes attracts over 400,000 visitors per year and offers a wide variety of activities, including: • Boating on Lakes 1 and 5 (check with the lakes office for any changes)...canoe, kayak, rowboat and pedal boat rentals are available. • Fishing in Lakes 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7 (check with the lakes office for any changes). Catfish are prominent in Lake 2, while Rainbow Trout are frequently caught in Lakes 3 and 4; Lake 3 also has a fishing pier. Only campers may use Lakes 6 and 7, which hold Largemouth Bass, as well as Catfish. Fishing is only permitted from the shore as boats are not allowed on the fishing lakes.
Please Note! Swimming and wading are prohibited in all seven lakes. For additional information about Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve, visit their website. Now for some specifics regarding our caravan at Santee Lakes...click here for a map that shows where we will be camping (we will be dry camping in the parking lots on the western edges of Lake 1 and Lake 2). • You are welcome to arrive at Santee Lakes on Tuesday, June 3rd, and camp at our club rates as long as you're parked in our designated area. If you wish to come in before Tuesday or stay Sunday night (June 8th), the park fees range from $34.00 - $42.00 per night. The caravan fees will be $10.00 per night. • Please back-in or pull forward to allow enough room for everyone, and please make sure rigs do not obstruct the pathways as they are used by day users. • Please do not park on the grass and please make sure to leave room for an emergency lane. • Fire pots are allowed only in the dirt areas; please not on the grass or asphalt. • There is a dump station (with water) for our use at the other end of the park and propane can be purchased at 10:00 A.M. & 2:30 P.M. by appointment. • Please note that the the park entrance has been changed since we were there in 2005 – you now enter off of Fanita Parkway. Hot Dog Cookout!
Join us on Saturday, June 7th, for a Hot Dog Cookout! Bring your hot dogs and buns and, if you like, a side dish (beans, chili, sauerkraut, salad...stuff like that).
IMPORTANT NOTE TO ALL DOG OWNERS! The area our caravan will be held in (around Lakes 1 and 2) is normally a no-dogs-allowed day-use area. In 2005, the Santee Parks folks received many comments from dog-owning locals who walk and jog in that area and wondered why we were able to walk dogs there while they may not. In an effort to appease the locals, the Santee Parks folks are requiring caravaners to keep their dogs near their rigs and to NOT WALK THEIR DOGS beyond our area. Many thanks for your cooperation on this matter. Good Things To Do There's so much to do right within the borders of Santee Lakes, but if you find yourself wishing to wander a bit, you might like to try one of the following: Trolley Square in Santee...this is regarded as the centerpiece of the city of Santee's current prosperity. It's a "mixed-use" project built around the terminus of the trolley line that runs from downtown San Diego to Santee. Tenants of the project include (at "press time"): Target, TJ Maxx, Staples, The Olive Garden, Chilis and (hooray!) Starbucks. Located on Mission Gorge Road in Santee; call 619-596-5677 for more information or check out their very informative website. The Gaslamp Quarter in downtown San Diego offers a truly eclectic blend of food, fun and culture, all within one of San Diego's most historic areas. You'll find an amazing variety of restaurants (over 100!), along with art galleries, boutiques, bazaars and specialty stores, many in Victorian-style buildings constructed between 1873 and 1930. As the sun sets, the old-fashioned gaslamps glow along the wide brick walkways. The Gaslamp Quarter is eight blocks long (from Broadway to Harbor Drive) and two blocks wide (from Fourth to Sixth Avenues). There's plenty of parking along the streets and in nearby parking lots. Call 619-233-5227 for more information or click here for their website. And of course, there are San Diego's very well known attractions: The San Diego Zoo (619-231-1515 or click here for their website) The San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park (760-747-8702 or click here for their website) SeaWorld (619-226-3901 or click here for their website) |
